দেবদাস – শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় এক একদিন বৈশাখের দ্বিপ্রহরে রৌদ্রেরও অন্ত ছিল না উত্তাপেরও সীমা ছিল না। ঠিক সেই সময়টিতে মুখুয্যেদের দেবদাস পাঠশালা-ঘরের এক কোণে ছেঁড়া মাদুরের উপর বসিয়া, শ্লেট হাতে লইয়া, চক্ষু চাহিয়া, বুজিয়া, পা ছড়াইয়া, হাই তুলিয়া, অবশেষে হঠাৎ খুব চিন্তাশীল হইয়া উঠিল; এবং নিমিষে স্থির করিয়া ফেলিল যে, এই পরম রমণীয় সময়টিতে মাঠে মাঠে ঘুড়ি উড়াইয়া বেড়ানোব পরিবর্ত্তে পাঠশালায় আবদ্ধ থাকাটা কিছু নয়। উর্ব্বর মস্তিষ্কে একটা উপায়ও গজাইয়া উঠিল। সে শ্লেট-হাতে উঠিয়া দাড়াইল। পাঠশালায় এখন টিফিনের ছুটি হইয়াছিল। বালকের দল নানারূপ ভাব-ভঙ্গী ও শব্দ-সাড়া করিয়া অনতিদূরের বটবৃক্ষতলে ডাংগুলি খেলিতেছিল। দেবদাস সেদিকে একবার চাহিল। টিফিনের ছুটি সে পায় না—কেননা গোবিন্দ পণ্ডিত অনেকবার দেখিয়াছেন যে, একবার পাঠশালা হইতে বাহির হইয়া পুনরায় প্রবেশ করাটা দেবদাস নিতান্ত অপছন্দ করে। তাঁহার পিতারও নিষেধ ছিল। নানা কারণে ইহা স্থির হইয়াছিল যে, এই সময়টিতে সে সর্দ্দার-পোড়ো ভুলোর জিম্মায় থাকিবে। এখন ঘরের মধ্যে শুধু পণ্ডিত মহাশয় দ্বিপ্রাহরিক আলস্যে চক্ষু মুদ...
